After a long work week, my muscles and joints begin to flare up. If you reside in a snowy region of the country, like mine, shoveling has become a strenuous everyday activity. I was always told to ice and elevate ailing joints and muscle pains. However, this can be a time consuming ritual that doesn’t work for everybody. After extensive research on different forms of pain relieving formulas and practices, I was introduced to Good Grease’s Pure CBD Topical Rub line.
Good Grease’s Call to Action
Good Grease is one of the latest brands out of Southern California to launch their own line of all-natural, Pure CBD Topical Rubs.
Hillary Rossi, the founder of Good Grease, created this product line to alleviate her partner’s diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. The partner, an aspiring baker, struggled with chronic hand and joint pain due to her progressive arthritis, threatening to cut her culinary aspirations short. This was a call-to-arms for Rossi, who set out to create a topical rub effective at isolating and alleviating chronic pain.
The resulting formula is an all-natural ingredient blend of coconut oil, aloe vera gel, shea butter and vitamin E, made with a Pure THC-Free CBD Isolate, for fast acting, long lasting relief.
Rossi handcrafts and jars each bottle before a third party lab tests each product. In the About US Rossi states the importance of handcrafting every individual shipment is that she can assure consistency, goodness, and love is infused into every jar whereas mass production would water down the product.
How do Topical rubs work?
Topical rubs and remedies that utilize CBD and/or other cannabinoids are effective for relieving muscle and joint pain. That’s because they activate cannabinoid receptors on epidermal cells (cells on the outermost part of the skin) which regulate function on the barrier of the skin. In other words, activating cannabinoids on the skin modifies the cells on the surface of the skin, whether through proliferation, differentiation, or apoptosis to enhance physical well being. Additionally, endocannabinoids are effective in the suppression of inflammation — making topical rubs effective at combating localized pain near the surface of the skin.
How does a CBD Isolate work?
CBD Isolates are some of the purest CBD oils on the market. They contain no other cannabis plant compounds such as THC or terpenes — they are all removed, except the CBD. Because it is refined, it has no observable taste or odor, Healthline explains. But, it retains the beneficial effects that CBD provides against pain and inflammation.
Third-Party Tested Topical Rubs
Good Grease offers two sizes of their Pure CBD Topical Rub. Customers can purchase rubs in either 125 mg (.25 ounce) or 1,000 mg (2 ounces) portions in two respective scents: Lavender and Unscented. The company recommends the 125 mg portion for sampling purposes as well as quick and effective relief on-the-go. It’s recommended uses include: relieving cramps, muscle spasms, joint pain, arthritis, chronic pain, nerve pain, dry skin, and even to calm psoriasis.
Good Grease’s website and product labels suggests that each rub is tested by a third party to verify they contain 150 mg of CBD. However, after extensive research to confirm this, I found it incredibly difficult to verify. The website suggests that customers can review the details of the third-party test results upon request. But then why not make them more accessible? CBD product testing is somewhat limited and in recent reviews of individual product lines, such as a CBD product sold by Slade Smiley and Gretchen Rossi of “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” it has been made apparent that consumers have ample reason to be skeptical about what products they’re using.
Good Grease’s CBD Lavender Rub to the Rescue
I suffer from chronic knee pain and related lower back aches after years of playing competitive soccer and suffering two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Through my late high school and early college years, I endured three major reconstructive knee surgeries that forced me to hang up my cleats. After months of physical therapy, I have regained most of my mobility. But I will live with debilitating aches and pains for the foreseeable future.
That said, I take Ibuprofen on a semi regular basis, especially on the days that my pain is too much to withstand. Many have recommended topical treatments before. But I’ve never had the opportunity to try one because they typically run on the more expensive side. All things considered, I was really excited for the opportunity to test the Lavender and Unscented Good Grease rubs.
The rub, itself, has a cream-like color and reminds me of a hair grease. It’s very smooth and is easy to work my fingers through. For my first experience, I applied the Lavender rub to my lower back after a long day of shoveling. To my surprise, my pain levels reduced considerably within five to 10 minutes. If my pain levels were at a six out of 10 to start, within the half hour, they relinquished entirely.
The rub’s calming sensation helped alleviate my aches and pains.. Its natural scent of lavender is very pleasant and provides additional relaxation.

The Unscented Blend
After a long day on my feet, my knees were characteristically throbbing. I felt it would be the perfect time to try the Unscented rub. I felt considerable relief after massaging it on, and around my kneecaps. If my pain levels were at an eight out of 10, after a single application of the rub, they reduced to a measly two.

Final Thoughts
As I previously stated, these were my first experiences with CBD-infused topicals. And I want to explore more of this market. However, that could be an expensive venture. I recommend Good Grease’s Pure CBD Topical Rub as an effective, but expensive option for anyone suffering from chronic aches and pains.
Overall Emerald Rating: 4.5/5
