So next time you find yourself faced with fear over the dreaded “last paper,” resort to Emerald’s list of safe and fun DIY smoking devices. Not only will these tips and tricks save you from having to leave your apartment to get high, evidence disposal just got a whole lot easier too.
DIY Smoking Devices
Apple Pipe
Being one of the most classic DIY pipes known to weed lovers, new and old, you’ve likely pulled out the apple one time or another in your smoking career. But, in case you haven’t, here’s exactly how it works.
What you’ll need:
- Cannabis
- Any kind of apple
- Poking devices (pen, knife, key)
- Lighter
First things first: twist off the apple’s stem (you’ll likely immediately recognize the natural bowl). Next, poke a hole where the stem was and carve down until you’re about halfway through the apple to create a bowl. Now use your poking device to make a mouthpiece on the side of the apple, being sure that it connects with your original bowl hole. Continuing pushing all the way through and out the other side to create a carb that allows for air flow through all the chambers. Lastly, pack your new apple-bowl full of your favorite kush and enjoy!
Pen Pipe
One hitters are and have always been one of the most popular and simple smoking devices out there. That being said, here’s how you can make one yourself in just two simple steps.
What you’ll need:
- Clickable pen with unscrewable metal tip
- Cannabis
- Lighter
First, remove both the top of the pen (the clickable part) and the ink chamber. Next, screw off the metal tip and flip it around to reinsert it into the pen, pointy side first. By now you’ve probably got it figured out and are likely already puffing away, but if not, all you need to do is simply fill your new bowl and inhale from the opposite end. Make sure to never use a plastic tip when as it can burn and release toxic fumes.
TeePee Steamroller Pipe
Old toilet paper rolls are useful for all kinds of crafts, so who’s to say adults shouldn’t join in on the fun?
What you’ll need:
- Empty toilet paper or paper towel roll
- Scissors or knife
- Aluminum foil
- Thumbtack or pin
- Cannabis
- Lighter
First, carve a hole a few inches from the end of the roll, this hole can be big or small, depending on how hefty of a hit you’re envisioning. Next, using your pin or other poking instrument, create very tiny holes in a small piece of foil. Use this foil to cover the hole, forming it with just enough indentation to create a bowl for you bud. Using one end as a mouthpiece and the other as a carb, you’re now ready to puff away with your new tee-pee steamrollers.
Pro Tip: Toilet paper rolls also make great sploofs. So if you’re worried about stinking up your apartment, load another up with dryer sheets and exhale through that.
Grav Bong
Probably the most effective on the list in terms of performance and quality, the gravity bong is one of the most commonly used DIY smoking devices amongst stoners. Some even prefer this method over any joint or glass pipe because it’s reputation to get users, well, pretty damn ripped.
What you’ll need:
- Plastic bottle (ideally 16-20oz)
- Bucket, or 2 liter plastic bottle
- Aluminum foil
- Knife
- Cannabis
- Lighter
This one can feel a little more intimidating for first timers, so instead of written instructions, here’s a helpful video from Supreme Deluxe on how to create this DIY bong.
P.S. If you want to try out this method and you’re not limited to basic household resources, we suggest opting for a one hitter or small bowl piece in your bottle cap, rather than aluminum.

Yay now I can smoke even though I ran out of paper????
Sarah says
I appreciate the ingenuity.
But…
I would not encourage people to smoke using aluminum foil. Get yourself some cheap screens at least from the smoke shop for when you’re in a pinch.

what about the pop can pipe my go to in need.

In Central America, newspapers were adequate for rolling the smokables 🙂
