Shark Week 2020 kicks off this Sunday, August 9th. The weeklong homage to the ocean’s fiercest predators will feature appearances by Will Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and Mike Tyson, in addition to 20 hours of shark-breaching, chum-filled action for which it’s known.
The series starts with Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach-off, and Shark Lockdown, which explores the effect of the coronavirus pandemic—or in this case, lack of human activity—on shark populations off the coast of New Zealand.
This year, Shark Week turns 32, which makes it one of the longest running events in TV history, according to Discovery, which launched the event in July 1988. To celebrate, Emerald gathered a list of strains to prepare you for the hours of vicarious underwater adventures.
7 Shark Week Strains
1. Great White Shark (GWS)
This classic hybrid is named after the ocean’s most famous apex predator, the Great White Shark.
It’s a cross between Super Skunk—an indica—and two landrace sativas: South American and South Indian, according to Hytiva. Also called White Shark or Peacemaker—it takes its moniker from the fierce high it delivers, and the white crystal trichomes that cover the buds. GWS is known to deliver a couch-locked high, which is perfect for binge watching new and old Shark Week specials.
We recommend pairing a CRU Littles GWS pre-roll with Great White Double Trouble, which premieres Monday, August 10th.
2. Shark Shock
The strain is a cross between White Widow and Skunk, and comes in at around 20% THC.
We suggest puffing on Farmer and the Felon’s Shark Shock flower—a smooth, uplifting strain—with heart-pounding episodes like Sharks of Ghost Island or I was Prey.

3. Tropicanna Cookies
This citrusy and earthy strain is a cross between Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) and Tangie. This tropical strain will put anyone in the mood for a night of underwater ocean scenes with its mildly fruity smell and flavor, and anxiety-easing effects,.
We recommend puffing on a Farmer and the Felon Tropicanna Cookies pre-roll while watching mid-week specials, like Adam Devine’s Secret Shark Lair.
4. Chemdawg
This sticky, orange-haired strain is pungent and powerful. Chemdawg offers earthy, tropical and fruity flavors with an upbeat high.
Pair a bowl or two of Chemdawg by DELI (a Caliva brand) with episodes like Alien Sharks: First Contact.
5. Banyan Tree
The strain takes its name after the Banyan fig tree, the national tree of India, known to symbolize longevity. However, it makes our list because of The Banyan Tree Global Foundation, located in the Maldives, a South Asian country which banned shark fishing in 2012.
As part of its conservation efforts, the foundation helps track and collect data on shark populations, and restore coral reefs.
We recommend puffing on Bayan Tree, also available through DELI, with mid-week specials including Extinct or Alive: Land of the Lost Sharks.
6. Bullshark
The strain, named after another peak ocean predator, is a hybrid of two of Dutch coffee shops’ staples: GWS and Skunk #5. According to Zamnesia, it’s more of an indica, and has a flavorful, sweet smoke.
This strain is mighty and packs a punch. But, it’s hard to find in flower form. If you can score some Bullshark, pair the hybrid with new or old Air Jaws episodes.
7. Sharksbreath
Sharksbreath is created from a cross of GWS and Lamb’s Breath/Bread (one of Bob Marley’s favorite strains). The indica- dominant strain provides a long lasting, heavy high.
According to Leafly, SHB leaves users feeling alert. Therefore, we recommend pairing this hard-to-find strain with the Shark Week finale, Naked and Afraid of Sharks 2 (the first installment premiered in 2019).
