For the past few years, CBD has enhanced the skincare industry as companies infuse hemp into their products. Now, consumers can find CBD in balms, oils, lotions, mascara, eyeshadow, foundations and more.
CBD is far from a new product, yet experts at MarketWatch estimate the CBD market will quadruple in the next five years. Currently, the market size is $429.4 million.
But, why is this one ingredient popping up in beauty aisles everywhere?
CBD in Foundation
Research shows that CBD is effective at promoting hydration and easing inflammation when added to skin care products. It can calm down irritated skin, prevent breakouts and keep skin moisturized. This is a valuable trait in makeup products, as people with sensitive skin are often turned away from heavy foundation or makeup products in general.
Additionally, in the summertime heat, a full face of foundation can also be uncomfortable. It can easily aggravate skin. Adding CBD to foundation is a simple solution to mix one’s makeup with beneficial ingredients.
In order to quickly test out whether it would work in my makeup routine, I added some CBD oil into my moisturizer and foundation primer, before I applied my foundation.
As someone with oily and sensitive skin, I look for makeup products that are not irritable. In the warmer months, I struggle with breakouts as well as sun damaged skin from the occasional sunburn. By adding CBD, I felt as though I was combining my makeup and skincare routine, with the intention of reducing breakouts and redness.
I also feel as though my primer did a better job of keeping my makeup in place, especially on a humid day. I imagine users could combine their CBD oil directly with their foundation, but I found the oil mixed easier with moisturizer.
CBD-Infused Foundations
In order to make a CBD-infused foundation at home, an array of products are needed. The first recipe below uses CBD-infused coconut oil, while the second uses a CBD oil of choice.
CBD and Almond Oil Foundation
Recipe from Cannadish
Makes: roughly 3 ounces of foundation
Start to finish: about 20 minutes
.75 ounces almond oil
.75 ounces CBD-infused coconut oil
1 ounce Shea butter
.5 ounce cocoa butter
.5 ounce beeswax
Cocoa powder (Add gradually to reach preferred shade)
In a bowl, mix the almond oil, CBD-infused coconut oil, Shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax. Next, transfer the mixture into a mason jar. According to Sarah Pettigrew at Cannadish, the next step is to place the jar in a pot of water and bring to a boil. This will allow the ingredients to melt together. Remove the pot from the burner, and let cool. Then, gradually add cocoa powder to reach the desired shade of foundation. Once you have perfected matching the shade of foundation, place the mixture in a jar and store in a cool dry place.
Homemade Power Foundation
Recipe from Simple Life Mom
Makes: roughly 3/4 cup to 1 cup of foundation
Start to finish: about 10 minutes
¼ cup arrowroot powder
¼ cup rice bran powder
cocoa powder (Add gradually to reach preferred shade)
¼ cup orris powder
CBD oil of choice
In a bowl, begin by mixing ¼ cup of each of your three powder ingredients: arrowroot, rice bran, and orris powder. Then gradually use either cocoa powder, nutmeg, or cinnamon powder — or a combination of all — to reach the desired shade. Once the powder foundation is perfected, add drops of CBD oil until the mixture is liquified. Lotion or moisturizer can be added for extra hydration. Other substitutes that can be used instead of CBD oil include olive oil.
These simple at-home recipes require just five to six ingredients that any makeup lover can try out for themselves. The best part — they are easy to personalize, and can be a cost effective way to combine one’s skin care and makeup routine.
