Borat Star Sues Cannabis Company
Sasha Baron Cohen, Borat star, is suing cannabis company, Solar Therapeutics, for $9 million for false advertising, and more. The suit comes after Solar Therapeutics “[…] used his Borat character on a billboard in Massachusetts,” reports The Guardian. The billboard in question featured the character with two thumbs, saying “it’s nice.” The company removed the billboard. But, Baron Cohen wants compensation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “[…] Mr. Baron Cohen never has used cannabis in his life,” his lawyers said, the publication further reports. “He never would participate in an advertising campaign for cannabis, for any amount of money.”
Democrats Release Federal Cannabis Bill
On Wednesday, July 14th, Senate Democrats unveiled a draft of their long-awaited bill to decriminalize cannabis nationwide, reports Marijuana Moment. According to a press release from Senate Democrats, the bill “[…] would help put an end to the unfair targeting and treatment of communities of color by removing cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances and empowering states to implement their own cannabis laws.” Additionally, the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act would remove penalties for possession of up to 10 ounces of herb, according to Reuters. It would also expunge records. Furthermore, it allow people to appeal for re-sentencing; leave the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to oversee the industry; put states in charge of cannabis policies, and more.
Cannabis Company Offers Sha’Carri Richardson job
This week, Dr. Dabber — a cannabis company — offered Sha’Carri Richardson, U.S. Track and Field star, a $250,000 opportunity to work with the company as a result of officials confirming she will not compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Moreover, according to TMZ, Dr. Dabber is offering Richardson the quart-million-dollar role to be a brand ambassador. The job includes testing out the company’s dab and vape gear, Dr. Dabber writes in the announcement. But, there’s no word yet on whether she’ll accept the offer, TMZ confirms.
Maine Ends Civil Forfeitures Without Criminal Convictions
This week, Forbes reports, “Maine became the fourth state [besides North Carolina, New Mexico and Nebraska] to abolish civil forfeiture […].” Several civil forfeiture laws throughout the nation allow officials to confiscate property of those suspected — not convicted — of crimes, according to experts. However, as of July 14th, that will no longer be the case in Maine. “Although civil forfeiture is typically defended as a way to fight back against drug kingpins, in reality, many forfeiture cases have been remarkably petty,” Forbes further reports. “In Maine, half of all cash forfeitures were under $1,670.”
