Jordan Yasgoor was attending college in Boulder, Colorado when the first dispensary opened. She stood in front of what was once an old deli, and walked up to the counter.
Yasgoor had brought her dad to the dispensary. It was their first time seeing cannabis sold in a legal setting. Knowing that her father had experimented with cannabis in his younger days, this was an experience they would share and remember together.
Yasgoor started the Bud&Rose shop pre-pandemic. As an artist, she wanted to do something impactful. She enjoyed home decor, thrifting, and cannabis– and wanted to incorporate all three into something she loved. “I wanted to appreciate and enjoy smoking accessories that are meant to flourish in your home,” said Yasgoor, knowing the negative stigma surrounding cannabis smoking. Many people find themselves putting their accessories away after each use which can be tiresome.
The beginning of Yasgoor’s creative process starts by hand picking each item. She looks for pieces that have only been used once, or are a one-of-a-kind item at a garage sale.
“[It’s like] when [you’re looking for] a diamond in the rough,” said Yasgoor as she goes on to describe looking for something you can’t find until it just appears in your life.
“My partner is always the one to remind me to ask myself, will it work,” she said.
The vessel must be a specific shape for it to work as a smoking accessory. Once they find the shape needed, the downstem and bowl is attached.
“I’m looking at the company in a few different phases,” said Yasgoor
Currently she’s been marketing on social media to establish brand familiarity. Her next step is to appear at pop-up or in-person events.
Recently the Bud & Rose shop was at the Rose Bowl flea market in Los Angeles. Which was a great success for the brand.
“Everybody that walked up was like, ‘wow, I didn’t think I’d be buying a bong today but here I am’,” she said. “That’s what I want people to [feel like] for the first time and [be] like ‘whoa I need that’.”
Ultimately, she wants to open a storefront and have people come in and enjoy cannabis in a lounge-type setting.
She currently runs the shop and has another full-time job that helps pay the bills. And like any business, she also faces challenges, although an advantage she has is being able to make her own decisions on how she wants the company to be perceived.
With each piece sold it makes her emotional to see people understand cannabis is meant to be enjoyed publicly, socially, and individually at your home.
People use cannabis for many different reasons; to get high, or for medical benefits. According to an article published by the Harvard Medical School, cannabis indeed does have these benefits.
“We should all be able to use a plant..whether it’s cannabis or mushrooms or whatever..the Earth has given us..[and we should all] be able to enjoy it,” said Yasgoor.
