Smoking weed is fun, but buying weed can be expensive! If you smoke daily, or even a few times a week, you can find yourself spending more than you might like on cannabis. Combine already high product costs with city, excise, and sales taxes, and you can find yourself paying upwards of $257 per ounce. But, don’t worry. We’re going to show you how to find the best weed prices in Cali to save you money while still getting you high!
Why Are Weed Prices So High?
California might not be the most expensive state to purchase cannabis, but it certainly isn’t the cheapest! No, weed doesn’t miraculously cost more in California than it does in Oregon, but the resources required to produce it are more costly.
The California cannabis market is a competitive one, already flooded with hundreds of brands, dispensaries, growers, and accessory stores clamoring for customers. Getting licensed to manage a cannabis business can be a lengthy and expensive process, and finding a storefront can be an even more significant challenge. Additionally, high rental fees and tons of industry competition are forcing brands to mark up prices to stay afloat.
But it isn’t just dispensaries charging more for their products — California taxes are largely to blame. When purchasing cannabis in California, you must pay a 34.5% tax, including a 10% city tax, a 15% excise tax, and a 9.5% sales tax. Therefore, this means if you purchased a standard ounce of flower from a dispensary for $257, your total cost would be $345.66 with taxes.
Budee’s Weed Price Breakdown
Budee is a weed delivery service dedicated to giving Californians access to a diverse inventory of products at reasonable prices. Besides offering affordable cannabis products every day, Budee also offers regular sales and special offers to help its customers save even more. For example, when you buy in bulk, Budee automatically applies savings to the purchase. Here’s how tiered pricing works with Budee:
- 8th of flower = $25
- 4th of flower = $45 (save $5 or 10%)
- Half Ounce of flower = $85 (save $15 or 15%)
- Full Ounce of flower = $150 (save $50 or 25%)
Buying larger quantities at a time can save you big bucks. Look at how much you save when you buy a full ounce — that’s almost a full quarter for free!
How to Find the Best Weed Prices in California
In addition to buying from brands that offer low pricing from the start, there are plenty of ways to save without compromising quality. Some of the easiest ways to save money buying cannabis include:
First-Time Patient Deals
Most dispensaries offer a first-time patient discount, typically between 10%-30% off when they make their first purchase. If you aren’t sure which dispensary in your area you’d like to make your regular, test a few out and enjoy multiple first-time patient deals in the process. So, instead of paying full price for an ounce (around $257), you would only pay $241.
Get Free Same-Day Delivery
It isn’t just direct purchases that add up quickly to your cannabis budget — the cost of driving to the dispensary can be expensive too. California is a large state infamous for bad traffic and high gas prices. As such, driving even short distances can be tedious and require a lot of gas, especially for city dwellers. Rather than spend the money on gas and waste your time sitting in traffic, try getting affordable weed delivery on same-day orders. You’ll actually save money, time, and energy by staying on the couch.
No-Tax Tuesday with Budee
Budee — which incidentally offers free delivery *hint hint* — also provides special pricing to all customers on Tuesdays. No-tax Tuesday, where you’ll find the best cannabis prices in California, with full ounces under $100 when you buy in bulk. Budee removes all city and sales taxes from their products on No-tax Tuesdays, only charging a 15% excise tax on already affordable items.
Final Thoughts
Smoking weed doesn’t have to be expensive, and you don’t have to sacrifice quality to save money. California is home to thousands of dispensaries and cannabis brands, so you essentially have endless options. The easiest way to ensure you are getting the best price is to buy from reputable resources dedicated to the customer experience. Budee makes shopping for weed a fun and non-stressful experience, offering tons of variety, all priced reasonably and available for free delivery.

The best way to keep costs down and protect cannabis from being monopolized by corporate interests is to grow it yourself or help subsidize your neighborhood organic medical marijuana grower through trading and bartering. There is no law against trading for medical marijuana if you cannot grow it yourself..

The taxes are to blame for the high price of marijuana in California? That’s insane. Washington state taxes it at 37%–never mind what the cities tack on–and I can buy better quality for literally* a 1/3 of the price.
Donald makes a good point. Oregon’s very liberal laws allow folks to grow quite a bit to point where in the central part of the state it is so abundant that people just give it away.
*And I do mean “literally” not the plague that is figuratively-literally.

The taxes are just one factor of why cannabis is so expensive in California. I used to live in Colorado before moving back to California where I grew up and I’ve purchased and tried cannabis and more than 30 dispensaries. California weed is just OVER PRICED weed to be honest. I can get a $250 ounce of weed in California in Colorado with the same QUALITY sometimes even more powerful for $100-150. And that is BEFORE taxes. They also have more taxes in California as opposed to Colorado so the prices of weed in California go EVEN HIGHER.
Overall, the issue is dispensaries over charge their mediocre weed before the taxes even get slapped on in California. California weed is more expensive before taxes. Than after taxes it’s just depressing. You would think that since California has much better outdoor growing conditions than Colorado that weed would be cheaper in California, wrong, they over charge everything in California for weed.
Also, there’s an over supply of weed being made in California, yet the prices at dispensaries for weed isn’t going down. Overall, California is not the best state for purchasing good marijuana.
