Makeup made with plant-based ingredients is increasing in popularity as consumers want easy-to-read ingredients that have health benefits.
Hemp Seed oil Versus Hemp oil
Companies are making the switch from synthetic fragrances and harmful silicones containing carcinogens, to something organic and clean. From skincare to makeup, beauty brands are opting to use hemp seed oil for a more organic product.
While hemp seed oil and hemp oil sound similar, they are different and yield different beneficial properties. According to CBD company Bespoke, hemp oil is made using the flower of the plant. However, hemp seed oil is made from cold pressing the seed of the plant.
Hemp oil is often interchanged with CBD oil as most CBD oils are extracted from hemp. Because it is made from flower, it is rich in cannabinoids like CBD and CBN.
On the other hand, hemp seed oil is rich in essential amino acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E, reports Healthline.
Vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids are commonly found in lash serums and products that promote hair growth of all types.
A CLEAN Brand
Companies plaster vegan and cruelty-free labeling on their makeup packaging to indicate their views on animal-testing. Additionally, Sephora has a CLEAN beauty section that highlights companies that are taking organic and ethical to a whole new level.
Milk Makeup is one of the CLEAN brands at Sephora. Milk prides itself on being vegan, cruelty free, and organic. In an effort to remain transparent, the company offers an Ingredient Blacklist section in their FAQ. Specifically, the blacklist details which allergens, colorants and other ingredients Milk’s product are void of.
What Milk does use, however, is hemp seed oil. In fact, the company’s line of KUSH makeup includes 14 full-size and miniature products infused with it.
The company’s hemp-infused KUSH High Volume Mascara is one of the top-rated mascaras on both Milk Makeup’s and Sephora’s websites.
In a consumer perception study posted on the Milk Makeup website, “95% of people saw high volume; [and] 95% of people saw longer lashes.” Additionally, 90% saw thicker lashes, while “90% of people saw lifted lashes,” the study found.
I decided to put this mascara to the test to determine if I can see the high volume, and longer, thicker, lifted lashes that Milk Makeup promises.

As someone that wears lots of makeup, I am often trying to find and implement clean beauty within my routine. In my search, I find countless mascaras that flake and leave dried mascara under my eyelids. That is annoying, and quite frankly I’m tired of it.
I saw Jkissa, a beauty influencer, review this product and I decided to read reviews from consumers to get multiple different perspectives about wearability.
Many Sephora reviews claim that this mascara was long-lasting. As a New York City resident heading into a humid, hot, and muggy summer, I knew I had to put this to the test. “Waterproof” and “Long-Lasting” are often what I check for when searching for mascara.
Flawless or Flaky?
When I tested the mascara, I used the product by itself to give readers an accurate review.
I woke up on a seemingly humid day and immediately wore the mascara. Immediate application of the mascara was flawless. I wore it throughout the day and took check-in photos to view the flaking and long-lasting powers of this mascara.
There was no clumping and it did not leave my eyelashes crusty like most mascaras do. My eyelashes looked fluffy and full without feeling clumpy right away. I did immediately see the fullness and thickness of my lashes. However, I did curl my lashes so I wasn’t able to see the lifting.
A few hours later, I got black flakes in my eyes, causing some irritation and leaving residue under my eyes. But the volume, thickness, and length of my eyelashes from the mascara maintained its thickness from the initial application.
It is indeed a stunning mascara. However, using other products with this mascara is beneficial to prevent immediate flaking and irritation of the eyes. I re-tried this mascara using the L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Primer and a Heated Eyelash Curler and the difference was noticeable.
Worth It?
Overall, Milk Makeup’s High Volume Mascara added volume to my eyelashes without making them clumpy. With the right preparations, this mascara can last for hours on end.
In terms of the price point, the mascara costs more than average. The $25 rice tag is quite expensive, considering that mascaras typically only have a six month shelf life once opened.
