I tried my first Plus CBD gummy as I was doubled-over in pain from period cramps. If a person’s final five and a half days on earth were spent in crippling anxiety and agony whilst bleeding-out, that person would be most likely to understand what I experience during my menstrual cycle. I have felt these debilitating cramps of both body and spirit every 28 days since I was 11 years old. Heating pads and containers of Tylenol never cut it, so I can’t say I expected much from a piece of candy. But John Legend likes them, and I thought, why not.
I ate a Balance gummy on day one when the pain was real. The Balance variety comes in blueberry flavor, and for the most part, that is what I tasted. Tiny, pleasant crystals of sugar surrounding the gummy cube coated my tongue upon biting down, and I was briefly distracted from my crazed mental state and the fact that I was possibly dying in my bed in Queens, New York. In that moment, I could have been standing in the summer sun, picking fresh blueberries.
But then the aftertaste kicked in, an artificial flavor much like diet soda, and I was reminded of the incoming winter, and the fact that my uterus despises me.
If I’m being honest, I gave up on the experiment after that. I gave up on returning to any semblance of normality during my period, I gave up on John Legend, and decided to watch TV and pout.
Fast-forward one hour into my trashy reality show, when it dawned on me; I hadn’t so much as thought about my cramps since the intro song. My body felt light, my mind felt at ease, and I think one of my neighbors–or maybe an angel–was playing “Ordinary People.” I felt fine.
Aftertaste aside, I would absolutely try these again whenever I need to center myself. Each gummy contains 50mg of CBD, so feeling balanced is essentially guaranteed. Anyone who can tame the beast that is my reproductive cycle deserves a round of applause, and my uterus literally Netflix and chilled. So, big claps to Plus for their Balance gummies.
