For years, those who experience chronic pain believed FDA-approved pain medications were the only remedy to their conditions. Today, the CBD industry has transformed the way one treats pain and gives patients alternatives. In response, millions of businesses have opened up, offering products such as edibles, tinctures, and self-care items.

According to MedAlertHelp; CBD is more common amongst younger generations. However, one in five Americans over 50 have used at least one CBD product.

As new users dabble with CBD products, they may consider the quality of products offered and overall safety. One company, Jade’s Botanical Garden  — an online CBD retailer — is dedicated to offering high-quality, lab tested products that they manufacture in the U.S.

About the Owners

Jade’s Botanical Garden is a minority and veteran-owned company based in Buffalo, New York. Both owners, Jeanette Alston-Hawkins and Wade Hawkins Sr. — a husband and wife duo — founded the company in September 2019. Its moniker combines both owners’ names: the “j” from Jeanette and “ade” from Wade together make “Jade.”

Jeanette is an entrepreneur, mother, and wife. She was driven to launch the business after overcoming her own health struggles.

Jeanette has suffered from migraines since age 13. After years of unsuccessful treatments, she tried CBD as a last resort to her chronic pain. Four years later, Jeanette has seen a drastic change in the rate of her migraines. In fact, her migraines went from occurring once a month, to now about once a year.

Research shows cannabis potential treats migraines. According to a study in The Journal of Pain, “cannabis effectively relieves migraine pain by up to 50%.”

Jeanette’s success with CBD inspired her business venture. “If I feel this good about having migraines and using CBD or cannabis, then other people should have the same feeling,” she says.

Wade — an entrepreneur, father, musician, and veteran — was also inspired by his positive experiences with CBD after a career in the military.

The military was a physically demanding job from jumping out of planes and other performance activities, he tells Emerald. After returning home, he experienced aches and pains in his knees. Jeanette introduced Wade to CBD, which drastically reduced his pain levels.

“I am a firm believer of it now,” he says. “I rub it on my back and knee [and] I’m fine.”

Studies show cannabis decreases joint pain and inflammation in both humans and animals. According to Healthline, a daily dose of CBD decreased joint pain and inflammation in rats with arthritis.

Inside Jade’s Botanical Garden

When starting a CBD company, finding a manufacturer, and creating a consistent, clean product can be difficult and time-consuming. Jeanette walls Emerald through the process of finding a manufacturer and the rounds of testing to find the best option.

Jeanette discusses some of her challenges throughout this process from taste, effectiveness, and feel. She explains how some of the CBD products she tried did not have the best taste, or the effectiveness she was seeking for her own product line.

Now, however, Jeanette works with a manufacturer that offers products she would use on herself. Additionally, products are made in an FDA-registered facility.

Overall, there is a lack of research around CBD. According to the team at BigCommerce, they encourage businesses to do additional rounds of testing outside of the supplier.

Jade’s Botanical Garden places importance on safety. For example, the company’s products are tested twice; once by the manufacturer, and again by a third-party lab. This helps assure the company’s products are clean, and consistent.

Products for any User

Jade’s Botanical Garden offers tinctures, soaps, capsules, tea, and bath bombs. Additionally, they sell masks, pet treats, and specialty products like vegan gummies.

A best selling product is their CBD Infused Body Butter. According to online customer reviews, people find it effectively soothes joint pain, psoriasis, and dry, cracked skin.

One customer, Flora H., says “[…] it works immediately. I have been able to omit getting cortisone shots in my knee and ankle because of the use of the cream.”

Another, Sam D. explains, “[…] I work seasonal for Amazon Warehouse and stand[ing] up for 12 hours was putting a lot of pressure on my knees. I was taking 6 Aleve a day just to make it on my shift. After using this [cream about] three times my pain disappeared. […] Now my father who is 83 yrs old is using it and spreading the news to his friends.”

Jade’s Botanical Garden can also tailor each product to one’s needs. Customers can call directly, email, or send a message directly on their website.

Customers can also find the company’s products at local events. For example, Jeanette and Wade both work with a cancer institute in Roswell Park, New York in which they were a part of their Market in the Park event — a marketplace for local artisans.

The company will have a holiday sale beginning on November 1st. As a veteran-owned company, Jade’s Botanical will offer a special discount code on Veterans Day for eligible members.

In the future, Jeanette tells Emerald her goals for Jade’s Botanical Garden, “we want to expand our space in the cannabis industry from not just CBD but also being able to offer THC as well and adult-use cannabis.”
