While CBD drinks can be calming, starting your day off with a cup of infused coffee or tea can also be uplifting.
This week I tried out three drink products from Willie’s Remedy, a hemp company started by country music legend Willie Nelson. The company — whose tagline is “Count Your Blessings Daily” — started in 2015 and offers a variety of CBD products. I tried out two different hemp teas, and one bag of hemp coffee.
Tea Time
The teas come in a reusable 1 oz cylindrical can with 16 biodegradable tea bags. There are 200 mgs of hemp per container, or about 12.5 mgs per tea bag. All the teas are chemical free.
The classic green tea was just that — a classic green tea. The flavor wasn’t overpowering, even when I left the bag in for longer than recommended (three to five minutes). I wish there was more flavor, but I guess that’s what things like honey are for. I didn’t feel many effects from the CBD in this tea. But as someone who doesn’t normally like tea, I enjoyed drinking it.
The breakfast blend had a richer flavor than the green tea. This one felt a bit more calming. However I still didn’t notice many of the effects from the CBD.
There was no cannabis flavor in these teas at all. Because they contain hemp, these teas are supposed to make you feel calm, relaxed, and focused. But, as stated above, I didn’t notice much of a difference from before I drank the tea to after.
Coffee Talk
The pre-ground, light roast coffee has 250 mgs of hemp per package. It features Fair Trade-certified beans from both Nicaraguan and Colombian co-ops. According to the company, each 8 ounce cup of coffee should have about 14 mgs of hemp in it.
The packaging was difficult to open. I used scissors because I couldn’t just pull it open like I should have been able to. But once I opened it, the aroma was amazing and worth the wait. It smells the way it tastes — light yet rich, with a hint of sourness.
Because the roast was light, it wasn’t too bitter. If you prefer lighter, more caffeinated roasts, like me, you’ll enjoy this blend. However, if you’re someone who likes the bitterness of black coffee, I’d go with a darker roast.
There was no cannabis flavor in this drink at all either. But as I was drinking it, I did notice an almost sour taste, though that wasn’t a bad thing. Just like the tea, there really wasn’t much flavor at all.
The coffee left me awake and alert. As time went on, I also felt a bit more focused on my work. The effects of the CBD weren’t obvious at first. In fact I didn’t notice them until I realized I hadn’t looked at my phone in an hour or so when I usually pick it up quite a few times.
As someone who suffers from anxiety and ADHD, I’m really interested in using CBD products to help combat both of those. I think the coffee is something that could really help with that in the long run. That’s because the CBD made me feel calm, while the caffeine made me feel focused — something I often struggle with. It lessened my anxiety about finishing my work, and instead of just wanting to lay in bed all day, I felt more motivated to finish my to-do list. Altogether, the effects lasted for approximately six to seven hours. I know this because I made the mistake of drinking it at 5 p.m. one day, and I couldn’t fall asleep until after midnight.
Is This Luxury CBD Tea and Coffee Worth it?
Each can of tea is $26, which is a bit expensive. The luxury packaging includes a reusable aluminum can and triangle-shaped, biodegradable tea bags, which have more CBD in them per bag than many other brands on the market. Because of this, the higher price makes sense.
The coffee is priced at $25.50 per 8 ounce bag. When compared to other infused blends on the market, that is actually affordable, considering how many milligrams you get per cup.
I think the idea of CBD tea and coffee is great. It is a bit confusing that CBD is traditionally meant to relax, while caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea bring you more energy. But I really enjoyed the combination of calm/focus, especially with the coffee. I could definitely see myself having a cuppa Willie’s Reserve coffee every morning to start my day.
