Café O’Charm
Victoria Voss
The Victorian village of Ferndale, California boasts many attractions for locals and visitors alike. From the well-known Gingerbread Mansion to the renowned Kinetic Sculpture race, to the town’s own pie company; Ferndale is the center of much charm in Humboldt County.
Humboldt Sweets Bakery and Café has been family owned and operated since 2012. Their new location at 614 Main Street in Ferndale is inside an inviting cottage painted a soft shade of grey. Their newly built front porch is an enticing attraction for passer-byers to drop in and take a load off.
Upon entering this shabby chic establishment your eyes begin to drink in every bit of its charm. All the decor in the café has been tastefully thought out and delicately decided upon. From the white chandeliers to the refurbished antique oven that plays host to the coffee station, Humboldt Sweets is your favorite home away from home.
The order I placed that luminous morning was of the bacon quiche, which came with a side of buttered Dutch crunch bread and a spread of local raspberry jam. The coffee, dark roast please, is locally sourced from Kinetic Coffee and readily available for your consumption.
“How is everything,” Sadie Pichulo, daughter to the owners, asked. “Wonderful,” I replied, “This bread is fantastic!”
“Isn’t it though,” Sadie exclaimed, “I try not to eat it every day, but you know, it happens,” she chuckled.
By the end of my meal I was lounging back in a chunky white chair embracing the comfort of my surroundings. Humboldt Sweets sets the bar high and satisfies your coffee craving. The next time you find yourself in Ferndale, make sure to swing into Humboldt Sweets open every Wednesday – Saturday.
