Emerald Aims to Uplift LGBTQIA+ Cannabis Businesses
The LGBTQIA+ Community Has Been at the Forefront of Cannabis Legalization
In an effort to raise awareness and spotlight communities most affected by the War on Drugs—Emerald is expanding its Conscious Consumption series to include a list of 100+ LGBTQIA+-Owned Businesses to Support Right Now.
The list—which Emerald will release this June—includes ancillary and in addition to plant-touching operations, ranging from retail to media services. This is an on-going list that Emerald will constantly update, so if you or someone you know would like to be included, please reach out at info@TheEmeraldMagazine.com.
The LGBTQIA+ and cannabis movements are intertwined. Dennis Peron, a self-proclaimed gay hippy, was at the forefront of the cannabis legalization movement in California, which earned him the title of “The Father of Medical Cannabis.” Although his fight started before the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peron realized the need for alternative treatments for side effects such as nausea, pain, headaches, depression and other symptoms associated with HIV. So he helped create the Cannabis Buyers Club in San Francisco. Then, in 1996 he co-wrote Proposition 215, which officially legalized medical cannabis in California.
According to High Times, LGBTQIA+ people use cannabis at higher rates than heterosexual people. That is in part because members of the LGBTQIA+ community are more prone to stress, cannabis activist Laganja Estranja tells the publication. “I think a lot of people who are gay, bisexual or non-binary [turn to cannabis] because they are ostracized at a very young age, whereas someone who is straight or in a heteronormative relationship isn’t quite as often.”
This is why it is important now, and always, to support LGBTQIA+ owned businesses, and to encourage conscious consumption
