Emerald Compiles List of 100+ Black-Owned Cannabis Businesses
Cannabis Media Group Works Toward Conscious Consumption
NEW YORK—On Saturday, June 20th, The Emerald Media Group released its list of Black-owned companies in the cannabis industry. The list, titled Conscious Consumption: 100+ Black-Owned Cannabis Businesses to Support Right Now, spotlights more than 150 plant-touching and ancillary companies—including media, retail, CBD and delivery services.
The list is ongoing. The Emerald will continue to update it, and asks audiences to contribute by reaching out directly to the Emerald via email or on social media, or commenting on the digital list above.
Emerald Media Group is also building a list of Indigenous, Asian, LBGQT, and Latinx cannabis businesses, and also invites readers to submit any information they would like to be considered.
“Emerald is dedicated to amplifying the voice of those who have experienced injustice and strives to be an accessible media resource for the public,” said CEO and founder Christina de Giovanni.
The Emerald Media Group is at the forefront of cannabis culture and reform. With new content uploaded daily, the Emerald is an essential source of information for both lifelong and novel cannabis consumers.
According to Marijuana Business Daily, approximately 81% of cannabis business owners or founders are white. Only 4% are Black owned. Despite this, Black Americans are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for possession—despite similar usage rates.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) finds that there are currently 5.85 million Americans with felony—and even in some states—misdemeanor convictions that prevent them from voting. When voting rights are stripped, voices are silenced, which ensures that progressive laws never get passed. This is why we must give a voice to those wrongly imprisoned for cannabis so they may use their experience to elect officials that will guarantee equal representation and fight to change outdated laws that disproportionately affect BIPOC.
The Emerald is proud to stand in solidarity with those fighting against racism, systemic oppression, and police brutality. We support Black Lives Matter, LGBTQI and women’s movements, and will continue to see it through that such communities are given a platform and a voice. The Emerald is proud to have diverse staff and partners with like-minded brands that share the common goal of putting an end to the War on Drugs.
