From Queen Victoria’s rumored remedies to today’s wellness trends, women have long believed in the power of cannabinoids to ease menstrual discomfort. Now, a pioneering study from the McLean Hospital Imaging Center and Harvard Medical School highlights how a broad-spectrum, high-CBD vaginal suppository can significantly ease menstrual symptoms. Participants who used the CBD suppository reported notable reductions in period pain, improved mood, and decreased reliance on pain medications compared to those using traditional treatments.
In this study, a diverse group of 307 participants assigned female at birth were given the choice between continuing their usual treatments for menstrual symptoms or trying a high-CBD vaginal suppository. The CBD suppository used in the study contained 100 milligrams of CBD, a compound known for its therapeutic properties.
THe study tracked participants’ experiences at multiple intervals: at the start of the study, after one month, and again after two months. The results were compelling. Nearly 73% of those using the CBD suppositories reported at least moderate improvement in their menstrual symptoms after one month. This positive outcome increased to over 81% after two months of consistent use. Findings suggest these suppositories alleviated a range of menstrual-related symptoms, improved daily functioning, and reduced use of analgesics. Participants who used the suppositories more frequently experienced greater symptom relief, insinuating a potential dose-dependent effect of CBD in alleviating menstrual pain.
“This is the first study to assess the impact of a ‘real-world’, commercially-available, high-CBD suppository on menstrual-related pain and discomfort,” or dysmenorrhea, says the report, published in the journal NPJ Women’s Health. The research “extends prior work suggesting [medical cannabis] has promising potential for alleviating menstrual-related symptoms.”
This study also builds on previous research indicating that CBD can help alleviate menstrual-related symptoms when taken orally. Earlier findings reported reductions in irritability, anxiety, and stress with CBD use, suggesting its broader potential for easing menstrual discomfort.
Expanding the Conversation: Cannabis and Sexual Health
The conversation around cannabis and its benefits is expanding beyond just menstrual relief. There’s growing interest in how cannabis might support sexual health, including efforts to have it recognized as a treatment for female orgasmic disorder (FOD) in several states.
What Other Research Reveals
Clinical sexologist Suzanne Mulvehill discovered that over 70% of sexually active women who faced difficulties achieving orgasm reported that cannabis use enhanced their ease and frequency of orgasms—71% and 72.9%, respectively. Additionally, 67% noted an improvement in orgasm satisfaction.
A 2020 study published in Sexual Medicine supported these findings, showing that women who used cannabis more frequently experienced better sexual satisfaction. This aligns with other research suggesting that cannabis can positively impact sexual function for people of all genders.
Online surveys further bolster this link, with some studies even noting that legalization correlates with increased sexual activity. However, a 2019 literature review offers a nuanced perspective, indicating that cannabis’s effect on libido can vary with dosage. Lower THC levels boost arousal and satisfaction, while higher doses may not have the same effect. In fact, it could even diminish sexual pleasure.
