As the end of Dry January approaches, many people are taking the opportunity to embrace healthier lifestyles all year round. From hitting the gym to exploring new hobbies, there’s no shortage of ways to start fresh. Among these trends, the Cali Sober lifestyle is quickly gaining popularity as a mindful and balanced approach to wellness.
What is Dry January?
As the New Year began, many embraced Dry January, a movement that not only promotes mindfulness around alcohol consumption but also delivers tangible health benefits. Research in The British Journal of General Practice aims to use this trend to discuss alcohol consumption and to inspire people to change their behavior in the long run.
Research shows that limiting alcohol consumption may result in better sleep, more energy, weight loss, improvements in skin and hair, and even saving money. These benefits aren’t just short-term; they can lead to lasting positive changes. In fact, a 2014 study by the University of Sussex found that 72% of Dry January participants maintained reduced levels of harmful drinking even six months after going alcohol-free. Even if alcohol consumption is continued after the month, it most often promotes more mindful drinking habits.
Dry January Goes Cali Sober
Participants who are mindful of alcohol consumption may want to supplement with less harmful and addictive supplements. They may choose to be “Cali Sober” and use cannabis instead of alcohol or other drugs. Many find it a less harmful way to unwind or celebrate, aligning with their wellness goals.
While the most well-known Cali Sober method only includes using cannabis, there are different versions that also include moderately using alcohol or psychedelics. The term “Cali Sober” or “California Sober” originates from author Michelle Lhooq in an essay published in Vice Magazine. Lhooq shared her experience of abstaining from all substances except cannabis and psychedelics, which are other substances some deem worthy of fitting into the Cali Sober lifestyle.
Methods of Mindfulness
While Cali Sober may offer a healthier alternative to alcohol, it’s not entirely without risks. Aside from the risk of addiction to any mind-altering substance, methods like smoking can be harmful to the body. Every cannabis user has their preferred method of consumption. However, those looking to elevate their mindfulness may explore less harmful alternatives such as edibles. Edibles come in many forms to suit different preferences, from classic gummies and baked goods to THC-infused seltzers. For those seeking lower sugar options, THC pills or tinctures provide an excellent alternative. Ultimately, practicing moderation and being intentional about when and how to consume cannabis is key to creating a balanced, mindful experience.
Despite taking precautions, the Cali Sober lifestyle is not for everyone. Those with existing substance abuse issues are more likely to find that going Cali Sober hinders their chances of lasting sobriety. Those who suffer from addiction and substance abuse issues should find support at rehabilitation centers or online resources.
One example of someone who attempted the Cali Sober lifestyle only to realize they needed more sustainable help is singer and actress Demi Lovato. In a 2021 article in USA Today, Lovato shared her journey after a near-fatal overdose in 2018. She adopted the Cali Sober lifestyle and decided to use cannabis and alcohol apart from other substances. She realized that in order to heal, she needed to be completely sober, highlighting the potential dangers and setbacks of being Cali Sober.
College Students Go Cali Sober
As cannabis legalization spreads, more Gen Z consumers are going Cali Sober. According to a 2022 survey by New Frontier Data, 69% of people ages 18-24 prefer cannabis to alcohol. Although alcohol consumption is greater overall, levels of intensive cannabis users have surpassed daily drinkers. Going Cali Sober allows for the social experiences college students crave without the nasty hangovers the next day. Flavors and strains of cannabis products are also limitless and can vary to pique many interests. Many find that it is a more enjoyable way to let loose and mingle with less side effects, while some choose to use both at the same time.
Alexander Wilson, a chemistry professor and co-director of Northern Michigan University’s medicinal plant chemistry program, states that the main difference between cannabis and alcohol is the way they affect the body and brain. Ethanol, the main component of alcohol, is a depressant that stimulates dopamine in the brain. Cannabis, however, affects the body’s endocannabinoid system, producing a high. Some may react differently to one or the other, creating preferences.
Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers all show a higher alcohol usage overall, but cannabis is consistently a close second across the board.
