The Long-Term Effects Sexting has on Your Health

There’s a lot of hand-wringing about sexting when it comes to teens and their mental health. Certainly, non-consensual sexting or sexting that occurs too early in life can have a negative impact. Since most of the current research is on teens who have had negative experiences with it, some say that the negative aspects of sexting are often over-dramatized, and the positive effects of sexting are often undersold, reports CNN.

But for adults, sexting is a different story altogether. It can actually be really good for one’s health, which is great since 80% of adults are sending sexts these days, according to PsyPost.

So, for the one of the four-fifths of people who send adult texts and images to other people, below are some of the long-term effects sexting can have on one’s health.

1. It can Improve One’s Mental Health

As we all learned during the pandemic, total social isolation isn’t good for us. Even limited social isolation can take a toll on the body and mind. The American Psychological Association (APA) has compared the negative impact of social isolation to smoking — so it’s undoubtedly not something individuals should mess around with.

Sexting is one way to keep in touch when the people one loves aren’t in the immediate area. It is sexual, certainly, but it is also social. When someone sexts someone else, they experience human interaction that may keep them healthy and prevent negative mental health outcomes like anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

Want to build sexual confidence? Sexting can help with that, too. When sexting with a committed partner, one may receive some positive feedback about their body.

Like anything else, the more sexting one does, the better they become at it. When someone feels confident sexting, that confidence can translate into other areas of their sexuality as well. For example, they might realize that they like sharing photos of themselves, and want to explore their inner voyeur a bit more than in the past. Or maybe they realize that they have the power to turn someone on using only words. Either way, it helps polish seduction skills, which can seriously boost sexual confidence.

It may also help someone use their creativity. After all, the imagination is one of the sexiest things about someone. When sexting, individuals are sharing a fantasy, so they aren’t subject to the limits that reality can often impose. As many experts have noted, sexting is creative, and creativity boosts happiness and can help people process trauma, reports Psychology Today.

2. It can Augment One’s Physical Health

Sexting usually goes hand-in-hand with masturbation. I mean, many aren’t just reading the sexts they receive for intellectual edification, right? And masturbation confers a lot of health benefits, especially when it ends with an orgasm. For instance, orgasms are credited with helping reduce stress, lowering risk of prostate cancer, boosting immune system function, alleviating pain, increasing heart health, extending lifespans, and improving the quality of sleep, according to Insider.

Lastly, it can bolster relationships. That’s because when someone does something out of the ordinary with just a touch of risk involved, they create a deeper sense of intimacy. They build trust and make a memory at the same time. The most recent research all points to sexting being great for long-term relationships. And having long-term relationships is good for one’s health as it helps people live longer and means they’re less likely to die of heart disease or stroke.

3. Safe Sexting is Critical

Having a good experience hinges on whether or not it’s done safely. So, to continue reaping the mental and physical health benefits that it confers, make sure to take the proper precautions. Keep in mind that one should always keep their face and other identifying features out of any photos or videos, even if they really trust the person they’re sexting. Technology gets hacked all the time, and so if one’s partner’s phone wasn’t extremely locked down, sexts might become public despite their best interests.

Another good idea is not to sext on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram. It’s all too easy to type in the wrong username and accidentally send something spicy to a boss or grandma. Plus, a lot of the social media sites have terms of service that specifically prohibit the use of their site for sexual purposes. It’s not worth the risk of getting banned.
