As temperatures rise and UV rays intensify, many are turning to natural solutions for seasonal health and recovery. Enter cannabis—a plant often associated with relaxation and recreation, now increasingly studied for its potential wellness applications in the summertime. From CBD’s protective effects on the skin to the thermoregulatory role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), cannabis offers more than just chill vibes for summer. It may play a crucial part in protecting, balancing, and restoring the body during the hottest months of the year.
CBD and Skin Protection: Shielding Against UV Damage
CBD, a non-intoxicating compound derived from the cannabis plant, has captured scientific attention for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But emerging research suggests it may also help protect skin from UV radiation—a timely benefit for sunny days.
A 2022 study published in Molecules found that CBD can help reduce oxidative stress in skin cells caused by UVB rays. By neutralizing free radicals, CBD may reduce inflammation and limit DNA damage, both of which contribute to premature aging and skin cancer risk. Additional research in Experimental Dermatology supports this. More specifically, it shows that topical CBD can reduce markers of inflammation in the epidermis and promote skin healing following UV exposure.
CBD isn’t a substitute for sunscreen. But, it could be a valuable addition to a post-sun care routine, easing inflammation and supporting skin repair. A growing number of sunscreens and after-sun lotions now incorporate hemp extracts for precisely this reason.
Hemp Clothing: Wearing Your Protection
Beyond creams and oils, hemp offers another sun-conscious solution—its fiber. Long valued for durability and breathability, hemp fabric also provides notable protection against ultraviolet rays. Research on textile materials suggests that densely woven hemp fabrics may provide natural UV protection. Some studies report ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), clothing’ s equivalent of SPF, ratings ranging from 15 to 50+, depending on fabric treatment and density.
Compared to cotton, which typically has a much lower UPF of 5-7 unless chemically treated, hemp has a superior ability to block UV rays. It’s also antimicrobial, moisture-wicking, and thermoregulating, making it an ideal choice for hot summer days. As sustainable fashion gains ground, hemp clothing is seeing a resurgence—not just for environmental reasons, but for functional summer wellness.
Cannabis and the Body’s Thermostat: The Endocannabinoid System
Regulating body temperature is a finely tuned process essential to summer comfort and safety. At the heart of this system lies the hypothalamus. But recent findings indicate that the ECS also plays a subtle yet significant role.
The ECS comprises endogenous cannabinoids (like anandamide, the “bliss molecule”), receptors (CB1 and CB2), and enzymes that manage the breakdown of cannabinoids once they are spent. CB1 receptors are found throughout the central nervous system. This includes brain regions that influence how the body regulates its temperature and keeps it stable. Animal studies suggest that activating CB1 receptors can impact body temperature by expanding or constricting blood vessels.
Interestingly, cannabis may both cool and heat the body depending on the dose, cannabinoid profile, and delivery method. For example, low doses of THC may promote feelings of warmth, while high doses may suppress thermogenic activity. Meanwhile, CBD appears to influence homeostasis, or balance, without intoxicating effects.
Though more human studies are necessary, these findings hint at cannabis’s capacity to support homeostasis in extreme heat. This may be especially true for those struggling with heat sensitivity or poor temperature regulation due to health conditions.
Recovery, Relaxation, and Resilience
Aside from these physiological roles, cannabis continues to shine as a tool for post-activity recovery, mental wellness, and social enjoyment—especially during summer’s more intense physical and emotional moments.
- Post-Activity Recovery: Cannabinoids like CBD and CBG show promise in reducing muscle soreness and inflammation after exercise. Products infused with these compounds, from bath bombs to muscle salves, are increasingly popular with hikers, swimmers, and cyclists.
- Stress Relief and Sleep: Heatwaves and long days can disrupt sleep cycles and increase anxiety. Many use low-THC cannabis strains and CBD formulations to restore calm and support deeper rest, making them natural nighttime allies during the dog days of summer.
- Social Well-Being: Whether it’s a mellow evening on the porch, a cannabis-friendly picnic, or a trip to the beach, the plant can enhance positive experiences when used mindfully. Low-dose edibles or beverages offer a lighter alternative to alcohol with fewer dehydration risks—an important consideration when the sun’s blazing.
Proceed with Caution
While cannabis can be a powerful tool, it’s important to use it responsibly—particuarly in the heat. THC may impair sweating and reaction times, which can be risky in high temperatures or during outdoor activities. Hydration is key, and combining cannabis with alcohol or sun exposure should be done mindfully.
Cannabis isn’t just a companion for winter hibernation or indoor recreation. Its potential to soothe sun-exposed skin, support temperature balance, enhance recovery, and promote holistic summer well-being makes it a versatile addition to the wellness toolkit. As research continues to unfold, this ancient plant may reveal even more surprising roles in helping us thrive—not just survive—the hottest season of the year.
